Social Inclusion at Hillside

At Co-op Academy Hillside, social inclusion is at the heart of our ethos and is guided by our 4Cs values: Creativity, Care, Curiosity and Connectivity. We are committed to ensuring that every child feels safe, valued, respected and able to thrive, regardless of background, need or circumstance.
The strategy aims to promote belonging and equity, remove barriers to learning, support socially vulnerable pupils, and embed inclusive practice across the curriculum, behaviour and attendance. It also strengthens partnerships with families and the wider community while prioritising pupils’ social, emotional and mental wellbeing.
Our approach aligns with key legislation and guidance, including the Equality Act 2010, SEND Code of Practice, Keeping Children Safe in Education, and Ofsted expectations.
In the curriculum, inclusive and ambitious learning ensures all pupils can engage meaningfully. Creative teaching approaches, adapted learning, PSHE, pupil voice and collaborative learning help pupils develop confidence, empathy and understanding of diversity.
Behaviour is managed through a relational, trauma-informed and restorative approach. Staff seek to understand the reasons behind behaviour, prioritise positive relationships, and avoid exclusion wherever possible, using incidents as opportunities for reflection and learning.
Attendance is approached with empathy and flexibility, recognising the link between wellbeing and engagement. The school works closely with families to address barriers, understand underlying causes of absence and support pupils to feel connected and welcomed.
Targeted support and early intervention are used to identify and support pupils at risk of exclusion through tailored interventions, pastoral support and collaboration with external agencies when needed.
Pupil voice is central, with pupils actively involved in decision-making and encouraged to become inclusive role models. Strong partnerships with families and the community help build trust, improve engagement and celebrate diversity.
